The wheel of the year has turned to its darkest point, and from now on the light will begin to grow stronger as the Oak King begins his long, slow climb from symbolic death back to the throne beside the Goddess. The Holly King won't give up easily, though, hence the extra-nasty weather associated with January and February.
Here's a nice ritual you can perform to welcome the return of the sun and welcome changes you'd like to see take place within yourself.
Yule Fire Spell
2. On a piece of paper, write in red ink (or crayon) a single word or phrase that represents a change you like to bring about in yourself over the coming year. 3. Place the powdered holly in the center of the paper. 4. Fold or gather the edges of the paper to enclose the powder inside. 5. Light a red candle and light the holly-filled paper on fire. Place in a fire-proof container or in your fireplace. 6. As the paper and holly burn, visualize your wish fulfilled.
For The Birds!
Or, melt equal parts peanut butter and suet together. Add birdseed until it hangs together. Roll into balls and hang from a tree in an old onion bag.
Cinnamon Ornaments
3/4 c. applesauce 2 Tb. white glue 1 oz. ground cinnamon 1 oz. ground cloves 1 oz. ground nutmeg 1 oz. ground ginger Extra cinnamon for rolling out dough Cookie cutters
In a bowl, stir together spices. Add applesauce and glue. Work with your hands until it forms a ball. If it's too wet, add cinnamon; if too try, add applesauce.

Lightly dust a clean surface with cinnamon. Roll out dough to 1/4 inch thickness. Cut out shapes with cookie cutters and use a toothpick to fashion a hole for hanging.
Dry in a slow oven or air dry for 4 or 5 days. Hang with a bit of ribbon.
Carolan's Cauldron Here is one of my favorite recipes for December. Suggest you at least double the recipe to make enough! Enjoy!
Rum Balls
1-1/4 cups finely crushed vanilla wafers 1/2 cup powdered sugar 2 Tb. cocoa powder 2 Tb. light corn syrup 1/4 cup rum
Process nuts and cookies in a food processor until finely chopped/ground. Place in large bowl and add sugar and cocoa powder. Combine thoroughly, then add corn syrup and rum. (Add more rum if the dough seems too dry to hold together.) Chill for one hour if necessary.
Shape into 1-inch balls, roll balls through a small bowl of additional powdered sugar. Place in an air-tight container and let "mature" for at least a week or two before eating - if you can resist!
Cooks Notes: I always add more cocoa powder than the recipe calls for. :)
Some versions of this recipe roll the finished balls in shredded coconut.
You can substitute dark chocolate cocoa powder. And if you don't have pecans on hand, you can use other nuts like walnuts, hazelnuts or almonds.
You'll probably need more rum, as well - I like to get my dough almost too wet because they tend to dry out during storage. It's messy to work with, but remember you can get your sweetie to lick your fingers clean! ;)
What's Cooking...On the Keyboard?
A Ghost of a Chance releases Dec. 30th! Book 3 of the series is percolating in the back of my fiendish little brain.
Check out the brand new AGOAC video!
I'm currently working on a quickie FREE story that will be given away in December exclusively on the SamhainCafe loop. Now you can download Dunvegas 2007 from the DearAuthor.com iPhone Bookshelf! ~~~ My fellow Beyond the Veil blog denizens are gleefully planning the next installment of this wildly popular, FREE short story collection.
